Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the right to challenge particular rulings made by the official, mirroring the system already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
